Up Close And Personal With Haleh Resnick.
Hello Haleh and welcome to Authopublisher.com. It’s nice to have you with us. You are a self published author, tell us what your book is called and what is it about?
Hi. It’s good to talk to you. My book is Little Patient Big Doctor: One Mother’s Journey. It is a true story of the experiences that I went through with my children and their doctors. What sets the book apart is that it reads like a novel and you step away inspired, empowered and with practical tips on how to advocate effectively for yourself and your children for any health issue.
Tell us a little bit about your writing process? What methods do you use to write and how did you make it through the grueling process of writing your book?
Well, the writing part came easy to me. As an attorney and teacher, I have many years of writing experience. Little Patient Big Doctor is a story directly from my heart and it simply poured itself out. But as in any other good piece of writing, the follow up editing, with the single minded goal of ensuring that I touch every reader that picked up the book, took many more hours.
Explain to us the process you took to get your book published, from formatting your manuscript to preparing it for print all the way to getting an ISBN and the book cover design.
I actually never went through the traditional publishing route with this book. I did a lot of research on self publishing and settled on using CreateSpace. The reason I used them is that they are affiliated with Amazon. For me this made me feel more comfortable that it was a legitimate, professional organization. CreateSpace actually formatted the book and applied for the ISBN. I designed the cover with them along with the help of a friend who is an artist.
Did you use the services of a book coach or a self publishing company to help you though the process or did you do it yourself? Tell us about your experiences.
I used CreateSpace and nothing more. I don’t discourage using book coaches or other professionals. There really is a lot to consider. As I formatted the book along with CreateSpace, I spent hours flipping through other books finding a font and format that was readable and professional.
What would you do differently with the publishing of your next book?
If the goal is to just put a book in print, nothing different. If the goal is to make it a best seller, I would market it prior to publication, ask for advance copies and set aside money to higher a top notch marketer. Maybe, I’d also get a different sitter. The first time around when writing Little Patient Big Doctor, I had a babysitter who while watching the kids, let them walk on the roof- this time, I’d like to keep their feet on the ground.
How did you market your book? Can you share some of your creative/non-conventional ways/secrets on how you sold your book?
When working on a shoe string budget, you have to put in time. I spent days on the computer, connecting to bloggers, tweeting, facebooking, submitting queries to newspapers to get the word out there on the book and every other thing you can imagine. I drove my car around town with a giant magnet of the book and put flyers up everywhere advertising it. It worked. The book hit the top 10% of sales on Amazon.
Share with us the different platforms you use to sell your book (bookstores, signing, affiliate programs, website etc.).
I am a speaker and always have my book on hand. But my only platform on the web is my website and facebook.
Do you use social media in book promotion, and if so, which platforms work best for you? Can you share some tricks you got making it work for you?
I love HARO. It’s helped me get significant exposure. I also like radio interviews- does that count as social media if it’s on the web?
Care to share some numbers? How many books have you sold to date?
I keep that confidential. But I’d love to add one more to that number- you can get your own copy of Little Patient Big Doctor on Amazon. Does my smile and a wink come across in writing?
How was your book initially received? Has it been reviewed? What was your response to the reviews?
People directly connected to it. Readers who were in a position to publicize it did so and with their help, I received significant national coverage including from CNN.com.
How do you handle negative feedback from critics?
I haven’t received negative feedback. Can you believe that? I guess the only people who have picked up to read the book are people who really connect to the topic matter. Two people picked up a typo that was missed in the book- I was embarrassed and glad they pointed it out- the next edition will have the improvement.
Where are some of the places where you sell your book besides through book distributors, your website, book stores etc.
None other!
Do have any future projects you’d like to tell us about?
I am looking to collaborate on a second book focused on other people’s stories. Can’t wait to share it with you.
Thank you for being on Authopublisher, Haleh, and I hope to hear from you again!
