Writing Tips – Great Stories Have Their Own Worlds.

Writing Tips – Great Stories Have Their Own Worlds.

I have been watching and drawing inspiration from the WWE for a while now. I suddenly had one thought, well; it was more a question than anything else. I’m not in America, but I might have the ignorant thought that events in the WWE is never reported on in sports reports in news. And there is plainly one reason for that, it’s because the WWE exists and operates in its own world. They do call it the WWE Universe after all?

Although there are many stories told that are inspired by true events, a lot of great stories are told existing in another world. They are this great because they require great imagination on the part of the author. What an author of a story as great as these have to do is play god in their own worlds. In reality they invent and create this world. There are no limitations to what can be done or the characters that can be created.

Good examples of these are the WWE, Lord of the Rings and its Middle Earth and Mordor and Neo in The Matrix. These worlds are so powerful in its creation because its followers deem the creation a part of their reality, if not The Reality. Let’s look at some points or characteristics of these worlds you can use to create your own.

It exists independently from all other worlds.

For your story to be successful in what is really a fantasy genre, your world needs to be able to exist on its own. This brings in many factors like a monetary system, government with some kind of ruler and perhaps a creed of existence. For your world to be independent you need to imagine an existence other than our own. Which means everything that you know goes out the window, being at least similar to ours but it offers you the great potential of there being no limitations to what you can make possible.

It has its conquerors.

What is a great story without heroes? These kind of stories we are talking about here usually has a plot of people fighting against oppression, and .. .that threatens their very existence. A fight for survival often offers suspense, intrigue and excitement. A battle and conquest brings the very characteristics that keep your reader glued to the pages of your novel. Conquerors make for great heroes but remember that it is not really effective without a threat to life and existence.

It exists with a hostile hierarchy.

Drawing from the previous point, the eminent threat bringing rise to their conquerors, this world exists with a very tight and hostile hierarchy running the country. As previously mentioned they oppress, enslave and overburden – a situation pregnant with revolution. Rife with corruption and prejudice

It’s characters are fantasy or mutant.

Fantasy characters are characters that don’t exist in our realm, they are trees that walk, or fire that talks etc. Mutants are of course any human with extraordinary powers. They are not from this world and neither can they survive in it, because their sustenance and frame of reference is in their own world. Anything else is just ‘strange’ to them.

It has the potential to go beyond one book.

The more creative you are with previous points, the deeper every level of your story goes: characters, locations, intrigues, development, etc. And of course, the deeper the story goes, the more you can explore each structure of your story. So far that it can stretch as far your imagination allows you to.

Comment Question: Do you have any other points to add to what the elements are to a great story existing in another created world?

Stop dreaming and make it happen!

  1. This may be off-topic, but how about changing the theme every now and then? Maybe not if it won’t look right, but I just get tired of seeing the same thing all the time. My own computer has about 1000 wallpapers that randomly rotate every 15 minutes, lol. Adult ADD I guess. Good post though, thanks.
